Swallow tattoo near the collarbone
Traditional · Chest · Black and grey · Photo
A small swallow in flight is tattooed on the upper chest, just below the collarbone and next to the shoulder. The bird has a dark outline with grey shading along the wings, body and tail. The ink is black and grey on pale skin, and the photo is framed closely on the shoulder and neck against a dark background.

The swallow is already waiting on the rail when the night ferry docks at Hull, a small grey thing with its wings folded back like a pair of tailor's shears. You know it can't be real. The swallows left in September, and nothing with any sense would stay out in this wind. But it watches you come down the gangway under the sodium lamps, and when you shoulder your kitbag it lifts off and goes ahead of you, low over the cobbles of Humber Street.

You haven't got much to follow. A tin of Golden Virginia, eleven quid in your pocket, and a shore pass that runs out on Thursday. Still you follow. Gulls are squabbling over the fish market bins, the chandlers' shutters are down, and the bird keeps just far enough ahead that you can never quite catch it up. Past the old warehouses it dips into a lane you have never walked, and settles on a bracket above a doorway with a brass plate that reads ELLEN STRAND, SAILMAKER.
The door is open. A woman sits under a lamp with a canvas across her knees and a needle pinched between her teeth. She takes the needle out, studies your face for a long time, and says, "You're late for the mainsail." You tell her nobody mentioned a mainsail. She shrugs towards the back wall, where a half-finished sail hangs with one bird already stitched into its corner, wings open, aimed at a patch of blank cloth near the luff.
"That one's yours," she says. "Been waiting since the spring." You pick up the needle. Outside, the rail is empty, and you thread it anyway.
