Swallow carrying blossom, painted design
Botanical · Colour · Flash
A single swallow is shown mid-flight with its wings spread, holding a small cluster of five-petalled blossoms and leaves in its beak. The bird is rendered with soft, layered brushwork in shades of purple, with lighter tones on the wing feathers and darker tones along the wing edges and head. The drawing sits on a pale sheet on a wooden easel, with a dark notebook and a softly lit window in the background.

Dolores Quill counted the swallows from her kitchen window the way other people counted sheep. Three had come back to Ashgrove House that April, slipping through the gap under the walkway canopy as though the concrete were a cliff they had known all their lives. The fourth was late. She watched it cross the car park with a beakful of cherry blossom stripped from the tree the council had planted and then forgotten, flying low and crooked into the wind.

Kevin from the caretaker's office said swallows did not bring flowers, only mud, and that the nests had been cleared twice already under the new contract. Dolores told him she had not asked for an opinion on birds. She took the stairs instead of waiting for the lift, fourteen floors with her hip complaining at every landing, and found the bird perched on the rim of the walkway light fitting with its wings folded like a closed fan, the blossom still in its beak, the petals a faint purple in the afternoon light.
She did not touch it. She laid her palm flat on the cold railing and waited, the way her mother had taught her to wait for a bus. After a while the swallow dropped the flowers into the gap above the strip light, where a nest of dried grass and old feathers was tucked against the concrete, and it stayed there until the petals settled. Then it flicked away towards the cherry tree. Dolores went back down the stairs, slower than she had come up, and did not tell Kevin where the nest was.
