Swallow in flight line drawing
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A single swallow is drawn in flight, with its wings swept upward and its forked tail trailing behind. The design uses thin white outlines with fine hatched lines across the wings and body to suggest feather texture. It is shown in one colour against a flat, dark grey background, with the bird centred and filling most of the frame.

The gale had taken our topsail clean off the yard, and by the third watch Cormac Tully was swearing that the swallows following us out of Falmouth were the only sensible creatures aboard. Nobody laughed. We had seen them come over the bow at dusk, a dozen grey-backed birds with forked tails cutting the spray, and no one on the Mary Ellen had the heart to say what it meant for a ship's crew to be shadowed by land birds three hundred miles from the nearest headland.

By morning the wind had dropped to a sulk and the birds were still there, skimming low over the rail, dipping their wings at the wet deck as if taking stock of us. Old Ada, the cook's wife who had sailed as far as Madeira with her husband and never once complained of it, climbed up from the galley with a bread roll and crumbled it on the hatch cover. The birds came down for it like they had paid for a ticket.
We raised the Scillies two days later under a sky so clean it hurt. Cormac went ashore with his wages in his fist and never sailed again, but I have a letter from him, dated the spring after, that says he saw a swallow over the harbour wall in Penzance and the bird wheeled once, hard and sharp, before it went north. He wrote that he knew it was the same one. I never told him I did not doubt it.
