Swallow in flight on an ankle
Realism · Ankle · Mixed · Photo
A swallow is shown in mid-flight with outstretched wings, seen from the side and angled across the ankle. The feathers are rendered with fine linework and smooth grey and brown shading, with a dark blue-black head and red throat and wing highlights. The bird is set against bare skin, with the ankle bone and lower leg visible around it.

The children in the front row stood up. Gustav, in the wings, pulled off his cap and did not put it back on.
In the morning he unrolled the canvas on the field and walked its length with a needle and a bolt of cloth, leaving the split open at the crown. 'Next spring,' he said, and it sounded less like a threat than a promise.
