A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Hettie Marsh had been counting the same tin of bolts all morning because the steam engine would not stop coughing. The fair had pitched on the rec in Kettering with its generator humming under the ghost train, and smoke from the galloper's boiler drifted sideways across the caravans like something looking for a way out. She wiped her hands on her apron and watched the swift that had been circling the big wheel since dawn.

It was a swift, she decided, not a swallow, since swallows would have gone south weeks ago. It had nested somewhere in the scaffolding of the Waltzer and now dropped out of the smoke in long, stitched swoops, wings stiff as a folded fan, then shot off towards the hedge with its tail streaming behind it like a pulled thread. Her father used to say the birds knew where the fair was going before the lorries did.

On the last night the wind turned and the smoke lay down flat over the field. Hettie climbed the galloper's steps with a bread crust and a jam jar of water, and the swift came in low, wings wide, and landed on the brass pole beside her. It looked at her with one black bead of an eye. Then it lifted, ran through the smoke like a ribbon, and was gone over the hedges towards the coast.

The lorries rolled east that night. By May the field at Kettering was only a ring of flattened grass, but the swifts came back to hunt over it, and Hettie kept the bread crust in her coat pocket all winter, as if somebody might come asking for it.
