Traditional · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A solid black swallow in flight, shown in side profile with its wings raised and a forked tail, sits on the ankle. The bold outlines are filled with black ink, with fine lines marking the feathers on the wings. The photograph is in colour, with a grey fabric shoe and a textured stone wall behind the skin.

Nan Tilly swore the swallow was the same bird that had nested above the stove flue on the Marigold the spring her husband went through the ice at Tench Lock. Nobody argued with her. Every April it came up the Wend on the back of the wind, forked tail cut sharp against the willows, and it found the gap under the cabin roof as though someone had left a lamp burning for it.

Her grandson Ezra, who had come to work the boat for a summer and thought himself too clever for birds, stuffed the gap with a rag one May. The swallow struck the cabin window three times, bold as a bailiff, until he pulled the rag free. Nan watched from the towpath with a kettle in her hand and said nothing at all.
That autumn the Marigold was sold at Stourmouth to a couple who wanted a sundeck and no birds. Ezra stood on the quay with his bag and the cold coming up through his boots. On the last morning the swallow came down low over the water, wings flat and tail split like shears, and it followed the boat past the bend until the reeds closed over it.
Nan said swallows go where the work is, and the work was hers now, so she went with him. They never found the nest again. But every spring after, a swallow crossed the towpath above Ezra's new roof, and he left the window open a crack, just in case.
