Geometric origami bird on a foot

Geometric · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A bird made of angular, folded-looking facets is tattooed on the top of a bare foot, with its wings raised and tail extended. The tattoo uses solid grey and mauve panels with soft shading, and the foot rests on a white textured towel. The composition is a close, top-down view with the toes and pink nail polish visible.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The paper bird had been folded so many times that its creases had gone soft as cloth, and Mira turned it under the desk lamp while the lorry idled behind the barrier. Customs officers were not supposed to unfold things. The rule hung on a laminated card above her desk, between the fire exit sign and a calendar from a grain merchant that had not been turned since March. Outside, the rain came sideways off the hills, and the driver's wipers beat a slow time against the glass.

The bird was angular in a way she had not expected. Its wings were built from grey and mauve panels, each one folded to a sharp edge, the shading laid on so softly that the paper seemed to hold a little light. Her grandmother had taught her to fold on a kitchen table in a town where paper was scarce, and she had been scolded for wasting a square on anything less than a true crane. This one had been made by someone who did not care about the rules, or who had decided the rules were for other people.

She eased the tail open with her thumbnail. Inside, in pencil so faint it had nearly rubbed away, were a station name, a date and two initials. The driver had told her at the window that his daughter had made the bird for the journey, and that it was only a bit of nonsense. Mira read the initials twice, then folded the tail shut along its old line, pressed each wing flat and held it out through the window.

The driver took it without a word. She stamped his papers, lifted the barrier and watched the lorry climb the wet road towards the pass, the little bird riding on the dashboard with its wings raised and its tail pointing the way home.
