Lavender sprig on ankle
Fine line · Ankle · Black and grey · Photo
A small sprig with a thin stem and several flower spikes rises diagonally across the outer ankle. The linework is delicate and mostly single-needle, with the flower heads built from fine dots and short strokes in soft grey-black shading. The tattoo is shown in black and grey against pale skin, with the cuffed hem of dark jeans and a light background framing the ankle.

The frost came early to Carrow Hollow that year, and the terraces above the mill were still silver with dew when the steward handed you the shears. "Every stem by noon," he said, "and not one spike bruised, or the queen's tincture sours." You had cut lavender since you could walk, but never on the Widow's Terrace, where the old plants grew taller than a man and the bees went quiet when you passed.

You worked down the rows with your sleeves rolled and your breath clouding. The bundles stacked against the wall like grey sheep. Near the bottom, a single thin stem had grown sideways out of the stone, its flower heads furred with frost, and you hesitated. Old Marta from the dye-shed had told you once that the terrace belonged to the bees, and that the Widow's plants were grown from a cutting of her husband's, who drowned in the reservoir trying to bring the queen's barge home.
You snipped the sprig anyway, quick and clean, and tucked it inside your collar rather than the bundle. By noon the steward counted fourteen bundles and frowned at a fifteenth that was not there. You said nothing. That evening you walked down to the reservoir steps, where the water lay black and still, and you laid the sprig on the top step with its heads turned toward the far shore.
When you climbed back up the path the bees were humming again along the terrace wall, low and steady, as if someone had given them leave. Nobody in Carrow Hollow asked where the missing bundle went, and you never told them. The frost lifted by morning, and the Widow's stem stood bare on the wall, its last flowers still open.
