Swallow in flight on the side ribs
Traditional · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A swallow in mid-flight with its wings raised and its head turned to the right. The bold black outlines are filled with solid black and grey shading that picks out the feather layers. The design is in black and grey ink on the side of the torso, with a little blush in the surrounding skin.

The old sailors' custom, she told me, was that a swallow meant a man had sailed five thousand leagues and lived to tell it. She had earned hers in a Wapping parlour under a red lamp, back when the river still carried barges. She had no use for leagues now. Lightyears, she said, were just leagues that had lost their nerve.
On the twentieth morning the drive throttled and the Marigold drifted in a dead patch where no stars were named on any display. Ruth unfolded her swallow, held it to the port light, and sighted along its raised wings toward a smudge of blue that wasn't on our charts. Swallows fly by the sun, she said, not the magnet. Nobody tells you that.
We steered by the paper bird for six hours. When the Hesper beacon finally sang in our ears, she tucked it back into the locker and said nothing, which was how she said most things worth hearing.
