Swallow, skull and roses on a thigh
Realism · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A swallow in flight sits above a shaded skull wrapped in a beaded chain, with two large roses below it. The linework is soft and the shading builds grey tones across the feathers, bones and petals. The tattoo covers the outer thigh and fills most of the frame against a light skin tone, with a patterned fabric visible at the top edge.

The whistle goes at ten past six, and you are already at the top of the drift with your bait tin knocking against your hip, watching the swallows stitch the grey sky above the winding gear. Nan always said they nested in the lamp house because the men were kind to them, and that a bird flying down the shaft was carrying someone's luck away with it. You laughed at that when you were nine. You stopped laughing the winter Gwyn did not come up.

Mrs Pryce lives in the end house on Terrace Row, where the roses climb her front wall as if they are hauling themselves out of the coal dust. She sits you by the range and counts her jet beads through her fingers while the kettle thinks about boiling. She does not cry. She tells you Gwyn wore that chain down the pit every shift for thirty years, and she wants it on someone who will still be breathing in the morning, not locked in a cabinet at the Institute. Then she presses it into your palm, cold and heavier than it looks.
On Saturday the rescue men bring the cage up with nothing in it but a lamp, bent and blackened, and the swallows dive around the headframe as though they have lost something too. You walk the long way home past the roses. Half of them are already dropping their petals onto the cobbles. That night you hang the beads on the nail by the door where Gwyn's cap used to hang, and in the morning a swallow is sitting on the sill outside, turning its head to look at you, as if it is waiting to be told it can go down.
