Swallow tattoo on the side of the torso
Realism · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A swallow in mid-flight, with one wing raised and the forked tail extended, is shown in black and grey ink. The feathers and body are built up with fine linework and smooth shading that gives the bird volume and a soft, realistic finish. The bird sits centrally against plain skin, with the wing tips and tail reaching towards the edges of the frame.

The swallows came back to the harbour wall the same week the herring boats limped in short-handed, and old Tam Gilroy said it was no omen, only weather. His daughter Nessa did not argue. She went down to the quay at dusk with a tin of bread crusts and sat on the cold stone while the birds swept low over the water, their forked tails opening and closing like a pair of shears.

The Maid of Lossie had gone out nine days before with a crew of four and had not come in. Nessa had watched the bar every evening since, and every evening the fog came in off the firth before she could see past the lighthouse. On the tenth night a single swallow dropped out of the dark and landed on the rope-coil beside her boots. It had a torn wing and it looked at her the way a man looks at a locked door.
She did not know what made her follow it. It hopped along the quay to the slipway, then rose, and she ran after it with her shawl trailing until the fog thinned over a skerry she had never noticed before. There, wedged on the rocks, was the Maid, her mast snapped and her sail hanging like wet washing. Four men lifted their heads at the sound of Nessa shouting, and the swallow circled once above them and was gone.
Tam did not say it was no omen that time. He carved a swallow into the bench at the end of the pier, wings lifted, and he never once asked the birds to stay.
