Two swallows with stars on skin
Traditional · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
Two swallows with swept-back wings fly diagonally down the skin, one above the other, with small five-point stars and dots scattered around them. The birds are outlined in bold black lines and shaded with soft grey tones across the wings and bodies. The composition is set against plain skin, with the design filling most of the frame.

Nobody aboard the Marigold could say who first fed the swallows, but by the third week out of Falmouth they were fat on weevils and bold as mice. Old Tobias Quirk swore they had come off the Cornish cliffs with the last of the summer, and that a swallow which rides a ship across the Bay will find its way home again. He said it to the sea rather than to the boy he was saying it to.

The boy was Samuel Hext, twelve years old and hopeless at knots. He spent his watches counting birds on the mainyard. By the Canaries there were two, and by the Roaring Forties only the pair, skimming the wave tops beside the bow as if they were towing the ship by a thread. Samuel wrote their numbers in the back of the log in pencil, because the mate said a boy who keeps a count is worth two who keep quiet.
Off the Horn a squall tore the foresail from its bolt-ropes, and the swallows vanished in the spray. Samuel thought that was the end of them. Quirk only pulled his cap lower and said they had gone to ride it out, same as the rest of us should have done.
They came back the morning land showed grey off the port bow, two dark specks dropping out of the cold sky onto the rail beside the boy's hand. Samuel did not reach for the biscuit tin. He held still and let them look at him, then opened the log and wrote the number two once more, underlined twice, the way you sign for a thing that has come home.
