The design is in black and grey on a plain white background, with the subject centred and the wings framing the composition.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The swallows came back to Hobb's orchard the week the windfalls began to split, and the miller's girl, Ada, counted them off on the fence post the way her grandmother had taught her. Seven pairs under the barn eaves. Eight, if you counted the one that came late with a torn tail.

The late one was called Tansy by the pickers, though nobody had given it the name. A thread had caught on its left streamer, and when Ada climbed the ladder to free it, the thread came away with a scrap of red wool that someone had tied there by hand. She kept the wool in her apron pocket and told nobody, because the old folk said swallows carried messages across the sea and back, and you did not want to be known as the one who read them.

In September the swallows gathered on the telegraph wire, dozens of them, muttering like a congregation. Ada stood under the Bramley tree with the wool in her palm. The bird came down, folded its wings, and let her tie a knot of it to the tail. Then it lifted, the others lifted after it, and the orchard went quiet except for the apples thudding into the long grass.

Her father said the bird would be dead before the mountains. Ada said it would be back by May, and that she would be standing under the same tree to see it. In May a swallow came over the wall with a red knot still on one streamer and a small heart cut into the tip of its neighbour, though nobody in the valley could say who had done the cutting.
