Swallows and quote script on upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
Three black swallows fly around a two-line quotation in black cursive script, which reads 'The earth has music for those who listen...'. The linework is clean and the birds are solid black silhouettes with minimal detail, while the lettering uses fine strokes with small shaded edges. The ink is black on pale skin, and the close crop places the design across the upper back and shoulder blade.

Iolo had walked the Bwlch with mules for thirty-one autumns, and every year the animals balked at the same stretch of scree below the chapel wall. The swallows were always the last to leave. They gathered on the telegraph wire above the inn at the summit, dozens of them, then went off in ragged threads over the shoulder of the mountain, low and fast, as if the rock were pulling them through a gap no one else could see.

This year his nephew Rhys came along to learn the route. He was sixteen and carried a phone that found no signal past the cattle grid, and he complained about the cold the way young men complain about everything they haven't yet earned. At the top, Cadi put a bowl of broth in front of them and nodded at the wall, where someone had chalked a line of verse under the eaves. "Read that," she said. "Some lad wrote it the summer his father died. Says the earth has music. I never found it."
Rhys read it aloud, stumbling over the words, and Iolo waited for the boy to laugh. Instead Rhys went quiet and looked down the valley, where the wind was combing the bracken flat in silver waves. Something rose from the grass, a rasp and then a whistle, and a single swallow cut across the path below them, close enough that its shadow slid over the mule's flank.
They loaded up before dark. Rhys led the animals down the first switchback with his head tilted, listening to something the rest of them had missed, and Iolo let him go ahead, counting nothing at all.
