Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a foot with the phrase "Find your freedom in the music." written in flowing black script across the outer side. The linework is clean and even, with the letters sitting on a gentle diagonal that follows the shape of the foot. The skin is pale and the image is otherwise plain, with a dark background behind the foot.

Sit closer, the fire wants feeding and so do you. My grandmother's grandmother was a fiddler on the north end of Rousay, and she never once learned to read the letters on the church board, but she could hear a sentence in a tune the way you or I hear a wave coming. When the landlord's son took the boat to Kirkwall and didn't come back for the herring, she sat on the harbour wall and played until the gulls went quiet, and the old men said the sea itself leaned in to listen.

The son came home eventually, of course, the way they always do when their money runs out. He stood at the back of the hall with his hat in his hands and said nothing, and she played him a slow air that had no name. Every time he tried to speak she turned the bow a little faster. Afterwards she told him the only thing she had ever learned from the printed words that came off the mainland ferry, a line someone had pinned above the bar. Find your freedom in the music, it said, and she had never trusted a sentence that short.

He asked her what she meant by it. She laughed and said it meant he could stop running from the boat and start running from the tune, which was a harder race and a better one. He did not understand her, not that night. But he stayed the winter, and the next spring he could play a reel that made the old women get up and dance on the flagstones.

That is all there is to it. The fiddle went to the sea with her in the end, and I have only the bow and this bad hip. Now put another peat on, and hush.
