Swallows on wires and grass across an upper arm

Blackwork · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

The tattoo shows several swallows perched on thin diagonal wires, with tall grass strokes rising from the bottom of the arm. The birds and grass are rendered in bold, loose black brushstrokes with areas of solid black and fine lines for the wires. The four photographs show the same sleeve from different angles, and the design is entirely in black and grey ink.

Mind the wire, that's the thing about the telegraph road. You don't look at the sand. You look at the line of wire running out ahead of you, and you count the birds sitting on it, because the birds tell you whether the water is still there. My uncle Haroun taught me that when I was seven and carried his tin cup across forty miles of nothing.

There were swallows on every pole back then, black as spilt ink, sitting in a row with their tails cut sharp against the sky. They flew low over the grass that isn't really grass, only the stubble the goats leave behind, and they dipped at the last stalks like someone flicking a brush. Haroun said a swallow never sits on a wire without a reason. It was listening for the men who strung it, or for the hum that comes when the wind is blowing up from the wells.

The summer the line was cut, we walked it anyway. The wire lay across the track like a dropped thread, and the birds had gone from it. Haroun knelt, pressed his palm flat on the hot sand, and said nothing for a long while. Then a single swallow dropped out of the glare onto the broken end and began to tick along the wire toward the south, toward the water we had not yet found.

We followed it. Three days, one cup, a dog that would not lie down. When we reached the well, the bird was sitting on the rim, tail flicking, as though it had been waiting for us to stop being slow.
