Watercolour rabbit and flowers on forearms

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A rabbit wraps around both forearms, with its head on the outer arm and its body curving along the inner arm. Loose black linework and splashes sit over soft washes of green, pink and blue, with grass stems, leaves and small blue and white flowers at the base. The tattoo fills most of the frame against a plain purple background.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Late in February the snow on Harrow Fold had gone grey at the edges, and old Mab Pelling said the ground would not wake until somebody asked it properly. Her son Tom laughed at her, then went out to the lower field with a spade and found nothing but frozen clay and a hare's form, a shallow scrape in the grass where the animal had sat out the frost.

The hare was still there at dusk, washed in the last light, its ears laid flat along its back. Mab set a saucer of milk and a pinch of salt on the step and talked to it like a neighbour. "You owe this valley a spring," she said. "Forget-me-nots for the ditches, pansies by the gate. I'll not ask twice." The hare looked at her with one gold eye and did not move, which in Harrow Fold was taken as a yes.

Three nights later the frost broke. Tom woke to a sound like pages turning and found the lower field full of blue and white cups pushing up through the grass, with stems that smelled of wet bread and crushed leaves. Where the hare had lain there was a ring of beaten earth, and the saucer on the step was empty and rinsed clean.

Mab did not look surprised. She pulled on her boots and walked the boundary, counting the flowers under her breath, and when she reached the gate she stopped and laughed. A single pansy had come up through the old iron latch, and beside it, pressed flat in the dew, was the print of a hare running back towards the hill.
