The swallows came to the well at Harrow Cross the spring the old clockmaker's daughter went missing, and they did not leave until she was found. That was how the village told it, and nobody argued, because the birds were still there when the tale was told, flicking over the rooftops and daring the children to catch them.

Her name was Ruth Calloway, and she had taken her father's pocket watch and a brass pen that wrote in no ink anyone had seen. He had made both. When the watch stopped at ten past four, he said, the road beyond the salt flats would open for anyone brave enough to walk it, and the far side would hold every town there had ever been and every one still to come. He used to say allons-y when he wound it, as if the watch were a horse he was urging up a hill.

She walked out across the salt with the sun behind her. Three days later a swallow landed on the lip of the well with a scrap of paper tied to its leg, and the paper said only: the watch runs backward here, and I can hear the tide of years. Bring the bread. Don't bring fear.

Her father carried the bread out himself. At the place where the road bent into nothing, he found her sitting on a milestone, turning the pen over in her hands, her palms full of small blue flowers that grew only where the salt gave out. She told him the far side was smaller than promised and larger than feared. Then she wound the watch, the hands spun the wrong way round, and the two of them walked home by lantern light while the swallows went ahead of them, chattering as if they had known all along.
