Mind, that was the summer the stranger came up through Thornwick wood with his coat too long for him and a silver rod in his fist that sang when he pointed it at a lock.

He mended the clock in the church tower without asking a penny. He eased the bolts on the bakehouse door that had stuck since the flood, and the baker swore the wood sighed when it gave. Hesketh's girl followed him about the whole week, and on the last morning she found him at the forest's edge with his brass watch open on a stump, its hands turning the wrong way round.

"You'll stay the winter," she said. "Everyone stays the winter."

"Not this one," he said, and he tapped the watch shut. "There's a ring of roads out past the stones, and every one of them wants mending." He lifted the rod, and the air over the bracken gave a small shiver like a struck bell. Before the swallows had even turned to look, he was gone, and the only word left hanging in the cold was Allonsy, shouted like a man calling his dog.

The girl kept the watch. She still keeps it. And when the swallows come back each spring, she says they are only carrying his messages home.
