Coloured flash design of a rose, sunflower, leaves, helmet and a pen-like tool, with banners reading DEMONS RUN, WHEN A GOOD MAN and GOES TO WAR, in a neo-traditional style.

Banner and rose design with sunflower and helmet

Neo-trad · Colour · Flash

A full-colour drawing of a tattoo design built around a central tool-like object, with a large red rose on the right and a yellow sunflower on the upper left. Two curved banners carry lettering across the composition, and a golden helmet, a brown leaf and a round dial with fine inscribed markings sit around the central form. Bold outlines, glossy highlights and saturated colour give it a neo-traditional feel on a plain white background.

The ewes had gone quiet by the time the cold got into the lambing shed, and I was still on my knees in the straw, trying to coax a match into life. Dad always said a farm in January was a long argument with the weather, and you lost it by lunchtime.

Then the brass dial in my coat pocket began to hum. It was the one Gran left me, its fine scratched rings like a map of somewhere nobody has been, and in forty years it had never done anything but tell the time badly. Now it was warm as a loaf. A white light spread from its centre across the flags, and on the far wall I saw the shadow of a sunflower, though there were none within miles in February.

I took the steel rod from the tack room, the one Dad used for breaking ice on the trough, and went out into the yard. The snow had stopped, and the air was so clear the hedges looked drawn with a fine nib. Something knocked against the gate, a sound like a helmet on iron. Two figures came over the rise in gold and rust, leaves pinned to their shoulders as if they had walked through an autumn that had forgotten to end. "Stand back," the taller one said, and his voice was kind, which frightened me more than shouting would have.

I did not stand back. I opened the gate, because the ewes were behind me and a farmer learns early that trouble comes to the gate whether you invite it or not. The dial went dark in my palm. Gran's rose by the water butt, bare since Boxing Day, stood in full bloom in the snow, and the strangers bowed to it and went back over the rise the way they had come. I hung the rod on its nail and went back to the match, which lit first time.
