Swirl-patterned dolphin tattoo
Colour · Photo
A dolphin leaps to the left, its body filled with black scrolling linework and curled swirl motifs. The fill shades from teal to deeper blue-green, with the black lines giving a bold outline and pattern. The dolphin sits centred against an out-of-focus, reddish skin background with a dark vignette around the edges.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
Eudora had the brush loaded with black slip and the jar still tilted on her knee when the boat's bow began to rise and fall in the swell below the harbour wall. Her father was shouting about the price of murex dye, but she was watching the pod come round the headland, grey backs breaking and rolling, the leader cresting so close she could see the bristle along its beak.

She had been painting dolphins on the storage jars for three summers, and every one had come out stiff, a fish with a face like a bronze shield. Her father said her lines were too careful. Her mother said careful was what made a jar sell in Miletus. Eudora did not care what sold. She wanted the curl of the back to look like the wave that lifted it, and the fins to carry the same breath of water as the tail.
That morning she painted the leaping one first, a teal wash thinned with sea water, then the black scrolls running down its flank like the eddies a boat leaves behind. When she turned the jar to the light, the dolphin seemed to hang in the air above the clay, its tail flicking toward the rim.
Her father lifted it and weighed it in both hands, and said nothing for so long she thought he hated it. Then he set it on the bench beside the ones he had made, and it was the only one with something moving on it.
