Blue dolphin with black swirls on a calf
Calf · Colour · Photo
A blue dolphin with a white highlight along its body sits diagonally across the design, with its tail fin at the top left. Solid black swirling shapes curl behind and around it, with smooth outlines and flat blue shading on the dolphin. The tattoo is photographed close up on the lower leg against a grey background, with the skin looking slightly textured.

Every spring the herring came late to Porthmorrow, and every spring old Jenna Pascoe said the same thing to anyone who would listen: that the sea had a clerk, and the clerk was a dolphin with a pale stripe down its back, who swam the bay counting boats.

In the year the Harrow brothers went out into the bad weather, nobody counted them back in. For three days the women stood on the slipway with their shawls pulled tight. On the fourth morning a blue dolphin came over the bar, nudging something along in front of it, and that something was the stern of the Mary Ann, rolled half over and riding sound. The brothers were lashed to the thwarts, cold and furious and alive. The dolphin did not wait to be thanked.
It turned out past the black rocks where the tide ran in whorls, the water curling on itself like a dropped rope, and it dived into the race and did not come up where anyone could see. Jenna said that was the point. The sea keeps its own ledgers, and the eddies are where it writes the entries down.
The Harrows still row out past those rocks every September. The old women still stand on the slipway and watch the water turn, looking for the flash of a blue back, because that means the count is right and everyone is coming home.
