Swirling family tree with Family script

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a bare tree with a thick trunk and many branches that end in curling scrolls and spirals. The word Family sits beneath it in a flowing script with a slanted, looped letterform. The design is rendered in solid black linework on a pale, slightly uneven background, with the tree centred and the lettering below it.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The oven had been lit since three, and Mara's grandmother would not let the first loaves go in until the chapel bell had struck the half hour. She stood at the long bench with flour to her elbows and told the girl that a family was like dough. You could not hurry the rising, and you had to leave room for it to turn back on itself.

Each child of the house had a scroll of dough shaped at the end of the bench, rolled tight and curling outward like a fern. The grandmother said the scrolls were the branches, and the oven wall was the trunk, warm and older than any of them. When her son went down to the mill town with a cart and a bad temper, she rolled his scroll anyway and set it on the sill, and nobody spoke of it for a long time.

Years passed. The bread went out to the valley in the dark and came back with news, and the scrolls on the sill went hard as horn. Then one February a man came up the lane in a coat too thin for the weather, carrying a sack of wheat he had never been paid for. He stopped at the bakehouse door, saw the sill, and laughed until he had to sit down on the step.

Mara still remembers how he pressed his thumb into the old scroll, and it gave a little, the way dough does when it is still alive underneath. She thinks of it every morning now, when the bell goes and she draws the first tray out, and she takes a fresh scroll from the bench and sets it beside the old one, so the branches keep growing in the window.
