Infinity symbol with family script

Fine line · Black and grey · Flash

The image shows a continuous black line forming an infinity symbol, with the word family written in flowing cursive script that runs from the loop's right side. The linework is thin and even, with no shading or fill. It is a simple monochrome design on a plain white background, centred in the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The road out past Tessan Well went round like a loop of string dropped on a table, and every traveller who took it swore they came back to the same stone marker by the second dusk. Hasna Veld had heard this from her grandmother, who had driven it in a borrowed lorry in the year the rains failed, and she did not believe a word of it until the odometer read 212 miles and the marker stood there again, a chipped white post with a child's red handprint faded across one side.

She sat on the tailgate and ate the last of the dates. Her brother Idris was somewhere on the far side of that loop, or so the map said, at a salt camp where the pump had seized. She had promised to come once. Each time she set off east the road bent north, then west, then south, and always it brought her back to the post, as if it were saying the thing she did not want to hear: you are not leaving, you are only going round.

On the third morning she stopped arguing with it. She wrote a note on the back of a fuel receipt, tied it to the post with a strip of her headscarf, and drove the loop once more with the window down, calling out the names of everyone she had ever loved, the way her grandmother had taught her to call sheep home. At the marker the note was gone. In its place sat a flask of sweet tea, still warm, and a pencil line drawn around the post in the dust.

Idris came up the road at noon on foot, sunburnt and cursing, with a jerrycan on each shoulder. He had walked the loop too, he said, every way he could find, and every way it ended here. They sat together on the tailgate and shared the tea, and neither of them suggested leaving again.
