The thing that came up under the harbour wall that autumn was no cod, whatever Dorrie Venn swore to the chandler. The men wanted it nailed to the wall of the Mariner's Rest. Young Tom Kellaway brought a rope and a bucket of brine to catch it, and I told him the sea doesn't like to be caught by a boy with a rope. He went anyway. By the time the tide turned he was sitting on the slipway with his boots full of water and his hands shaking, and he kept saying the eyes had looked at him. I climbed down at dusk with the lamp and found it lying in the shallows, tail lifted, the curls of its fins unfurling and folding up again slow as breath. I told it the light was on for ships and it had no business being in the channel. It answered with a spiral of foam that wrapped twice around my ankle and then let go. Tom says I'm a liar, but I've kept the lamp burning every night since, and I never once looked in the water without seeing that tail come curving back up out of the dark.
