Swirling night sky and sun on a wrist
Forearm · Colour · Photo
The tattoo shows thick, flowing blue and black swirls that curl across the skin, with a yellow and orange disc and a small spiral on the right. The linework is outlined and rhythmic, and the blues are lighter on the edges of the swirls. The design sits on the inner forearm close to the wrist, with a plain pale background and a dark sleeve at the edge of the frame.

Dear Owen, the lift was out again so I walked up all fourteen floors with the shopping, and I had to stop on the landing where the window is cracked and look at the sky. Mr Okafor from flat 9 says the council will never fix the lift before spring, but he says it kindly, the way he says everything. The sky over Harrow Court has gone strange since the storms. It turns round and round above the car park like water going down a plughole, blue and black in rings, and the streetlamps sit in it like yolks.

Your nan's old tin of paints is still under my bed. I dug it out last Tuesday and found the cadmium yellow squeezed flat as a biscuit. Maddy from the third floor is nine, and she has been coming up to sit with me while her mum does her shifts at the hospital. She said the sky looked like it was being stirred, so we painted it on the back of the bin store door with a broom head and the emulsion you left in the cupboard. Nobody has painted over it yet. Mr Okafor says it is the only thing on this estate anyone has looked at twice.
I know you think I should come down to the coast when your ship is in. But there is a small spiral in the corner of the sky, like a shell with the sea gone out of it, and Maddy put a sun beside it, a fat orange thing with a bite out of its edge. I want to see whether the sun comes up through the spiral tomorrow. Write back and tell me what the tide is doing where you are.
Love, Mum.
