The stall belonged to Evie Marr, who sold pink cupcakes in paper cases and doughnuts iced so thick with sprinkles they glittered under the lamps. Every Saturday a soldier called Frank Tully bought one of each and never once asked her to dance. He just stood at the rail, turning a bent sixpence over his knuckles and watching her hands.

Frank struck a match and held it high, and that sugar wheel caught the flame like a sunrise. He didn't dance either. He just said, 'Well, that's you told,' and pressed the sixpence into her palm.

Evie kept that coin tucked in the bow every night after, and the stall is still there, though the lamps are electric now. Ask the glitter on the floor. It remembers.
