Swirling tribal pattern on a lower leg
Blackwork · Calf · Black and grey · Photo
A black and grey tattoo of interlocking spirals and curved tribal shapes wraps around the lower leg, from near the ankle up towards the shin. The bold solid black areas alternate with white negative space and fine curved lines, giving a strong graphic contrast. The photograph is taken against a plain black background, with the foot visible at the bottom right of the frame.

The sea came in twice that wedding morning, once for the bride's feet and once for the groom's boat, and the old women of Skerrow said it was a poor omen. Nobody listened to them. Ilsa had been promised to Tobiah since they were children carrying crab pots up the shingle, and a wave was only a wave.

The trouble was the turn of the tide. Tobiah had promised to be back on the sand before the water reached the second stone, but the light made the bay look wrong, and he rowed out past the rocks to fetch the ring his father had dropped over the side. The swell lifted under the boat and began to coil. He watched it curl in on itself, slow as a fern unrolling, and he thought of his grandmother's stories about the sea-wife who kept her spirals in the deep water.
The water did not drown him. It carried him in one long roll, round and round, until the boat was set down gently on the shingle at Ilsa's feet. The ring was in his fist. Ilsa said nothing. She took his hand, and together they walked up past the old women, who had stopped wringing their hands.
That night the sea left a spiral of wet sand outside their cottage door, perfect as a pressed shell. Ilsa stepped over it on her way out, and Tobiah stepped over it on his way in, and neither of them has ever built a wall across it.
