Black and grey dotwork mandala tattoo with geometric borders covering the back of a person's neck, below a shaved nape.

Symmetrical mandala on the back of the neck

Dotwork · Neck · Black and grey · Photo

A symmetrical mandala-style design fills the back of the neck, stacking diamond and triangular motifs with a beaded border. The linework is crisp and the shading is built from fine stippled dots that give the central sections depth. The tattoo sits centrally in the frame against a shop background, with the person's hair pulled up and their face not shown.

The abbot's rule is that nothing in the scriptorium is drawn with a ruler alone, so you sit with a pair of brass dividers and a pot of iron-gall ink until the candle gutters. Brother Anselm has set you a mandala for the chapter house, a star at its heart, then diamonds, then triangles folding outward like the petals of a bruised lily. You have drawn it four times on scraps of vellum before he lets you begin the real sheet.

Shadow, he says, is made of patience. You prick dots no bigger than a lentil, one after another, so the diamonds darken towards their points and seem to lift off the page. Three nights go into the lowest tier alone. The bell for matins sounds while your hand is still shaking, and you learn to keep the nib moving through the sound, the way the older brothers keep their voices steady through the psalms.

On the fourth night Anselm stands behind you and says nothing. He traces the outer border with one finger, the ring of small beaded circles you have set around the last triangle, and counts them under his breath. Forty-one. He says the number is wrong. You have miscounted, or the design has, and you cannot tell which.

You unroll the sheet to the candle and count again. Forty-two. The missing bead has been hiding at the very centre, where the star should be, a tiny dot you pressed and then forgot. Anselm nods and tells you the chapter house will hang it as it is. Whoever comes after you will admire the heavy shadow of the lowest diamond and never learn that the first mark on the page was a mistake you chose to keep.
