T-rex and flowers on a calf

Traditional · Calf · Colour · Photo

A red dinosaur head with open jaws and bared teeth sits at the centre, with its front claw raised beside a dotted grey cloud and small dark meteors in the upper right. Pink and grey flowers with green leaves fill the lower area, and a partial design is visible at the right edge. Bold black outlines define the forms, with stippled dotwork shading in the background and smooth colour fills on the animal and flowers.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

By the third week the dust had thinned enough that you could see the sky again, though it was the wrong colour, a bruised pink that made the seed pods on the terrace look sunburnt. You are kneeling in the cracked bed behind the old seed store, pressing peat round a rose cutting that Oona swears will never take, when her boy comes running up the ridge shouting that the red one is at the wire again. You wipe your hands on your trousers and go, because Scarlet only ever comes down from the hills when the wind turns.

Everyone on the ridge knows the story the grandmothers tell. The sky broke open, the great lizards looked up, and the stones came down on them one after another. The grey that followed hung over the land for a generation and turned the rivers cold. You have never been sure whether to believe it, but you think it is the sort of tale people tell to make the dark easier to sleep through.

You feed Scarlet windfalls and let her stand in the thin sun. Her forelimb lifts at the wire the way a dog's paw does when it wants something, and her jaws open to show the yellow teeth. When you ask Oona why the old ones needed sky-stones at all, she shrugs and says roses like grey ground, and the ash that choked the lizards is the same ash that made the soil sweet enough to grow anything.

By the end of the month the cutting has opened, pale as the dust and no bigger than your palm. Scarlet breathes over the leaves, warm and slow, and you tell the boy that everything growing on this ridge started out as something the sky threw away.
