Tall pine tree in black ink

Botanical · Black and grey · Flash

A single tall conifer, likely a pine or fir, stands upright and fills most of the frame on a plain white background. The tree is drawn in dense black linework with fine hatched strokes for the needled branches, and a heavier trunk runs up the centre. The image has no colour and the composition is centred and symmetrical, with roots or ground lines visible at the base.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The car park at Hollin Lane had shrunk since 1989, or perhaps Rachel had simply grown, because she kept glancing at the tarmac as if it had moved. Forty people in lanyards were drifting toward the gym doors with plastic cups of warm wine, and none of them had looked at the tree yet.

The tree stood where the bike sheds used to be, a pine so tall its top had gone past the first-floor windows. The Year Six class had planted it as a sapling in a biscuit tin of soil, Mr Pardoe holding the spade like a bishop with a crozier, and they had buried a card under the flagpole in a tin that nobody ever dug up. Rachel had written her name on it in green felt tip and then felt silly for years.

She found the roots first. They had lifted a whole stretch of the play area into ridges, and where one root had split the bark, someone had cut two sets of initials and a date. Her own were there. So were Tom's, and the wobbly letters of a boy called Ashley who had moved to Canada the summer they turned eleven.

Her wine went cold on the root while the buffet bell rang. She set the cup down and laid her palm flat against the trunk, which was warm from the afternoon sun. Behind her the gym doors banged open and somebody called her name in the old, bright voice. She didn't turn round yet. She counted the rings she could not see and found the tree had kept its word about growing, even if the rest of them had been slower to keep theirs.
