Geometric feather design
Geometric · Black and grey · Flash
A feather drawn as a set of connected angular facets, with the outline in fine black lines. The shading moves from white at the top through mid greys to a near black tip, giving the form a sense of depth. The feather sits alone on a plain white background, angled diagonally from upper left to lower right.

The hole in the big top was the size of a dinner table, and Mr Haddow wanted it patched before the Saturday matinee, so I was twelve feet up the ladder with a pot of lamp black when the hawk-woman's headdress slid off its peg and came down the canvas like something trying to get away. It caught on my sleeve and hung there, a feather as long as my forearm, built from card and wire and hundreds of small cut facets that Mrs Oduya had glued by hand the winter the wardrobe flooded.

The feather had always been her favourite piece. She had shaded it herself, white at the quill and deepening through greys to a tip so black it looked wet. Nobody had taken it down since the elephant went to a farm in Lincolnshire and the ticket sales fell to the point where Mr Haddow stopped counting them out loud. He told us on Thursday the costumes would go to a dealer in Doncaster for whatever he'd pay, and that the big top would come down after the season if the weather held.
I climbed down with the feather under my arm and found Mrs Oduya sitting on a crate by the sawdust ring, mending a seam. She took it from me without looking up and ran her thumb along the facets, white to black. 'The light does this,' she said. 'Lamps in the dark, years of smoke. You can paint a thing grey on purpose or let it go grey on its own, and from the back row it looks the same.' I asked her which she had done. She smiled and said she'd forgotten.
We hung the feather back on its peg together, then I went up the ladder and painted the hole closed in mid-grey, not black, so that from the cheap seats the canvas would look like weather. When I came down, the tip of the feather was touching the sawdust, pointing at the exit, as if it had been told to go first.
