Tape measure ruler on a forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tape measure runs across the forearm, with numbered graduations and triangular flag markers at regular intervals. The linework is clean and solid, with fine tick marks and no shading, and the design sits centrally along the arm. The background shows a workshop with a red tool cabinet and a metal surface, under indoor lighting.

Ivor had the tape hooked over the brass nail at the skirting before Mrs Pender finished telling him the floor was perfectly sound. He ran the steel out across the boards, thumbed the catch, and let it snap back with the small hard sound he had loved since he was a boy in his uncle's yard. Forty-one feet. The hall had been built to hold a thousand, and nobody had measured it properly since the war.

She wanted the sprung maple taken up and relaid before the spring dances, and she wanted it done by someone who would not gossip about the bandstand. Ivor did not gossip. He worked with his mouth shut and his eyes on the numbers, the way his father had taught him, and he did not look up when the caretaker's girl came through with a bucket, humming something off key about a sailor.
Near the far wall, under the pale rectangle where the mirror had hung, he found the old pencil marks. Small triangles, one after another along the boards, each beside a date in a hand he half recognised. Someone had flagged the spots where couples had stood through the waltzes, the places where a board had given under a heel. Ivor measured from the first flag to the last, then from the last to the door, and wrote the total on his cuff.
By dusk the tape was rolled up and the flags were still there, because nobody had asked him to sand them away. He left them for the joiners who would come after him and walked home with the figures folded in his pocket, the pencilled triangles still marking the way back across the floor behind him.
