Tower sketch on inner forearm
Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo shows a tall, narrow tower with stacked platforms, a railed top section and a small dome or cap at the peak. The linework is loose and sketch-like, with hatched and scratchy shading that fades and drips down the lower shaft. It is in black ink only, set against pale skin on a single inner forearm, with the wrist and hand visible below.

Fourth day of the thaw, and the tower is weeping again. Black water runs down the shaft from the top platform where the soot has been building since autumn, and by noon every stone of the lower stair is streaked like a page someone has tried to rub out. Ada says it is only the old fire-pitch giving up its winters. I say nothing, because she has never once climbed past the second landing and does not know how the rail on the third went soft under my hand.

The surveyor came up from Vessary on Tuesday with a leather case and a pencil he kept licking. He walked round the base twice, sketched the platforms, tapped the dome with his knuckle until it rang, and told me the Crown has no further use for a watch above Hollin Reach now the pass has a road. Pull it down after the lambing, he said, and carry the brazier to the ridge where the wind can find it. He did not ask who would see the signal from the ridge. He did not ask anything at all.
So tonight I went up the old way, counting the landings the way my father taught me, one hand always on the iron. The rail held. At the top I cleaned the lamp glass with my sleeve, lit the brazier from the tinder box, and watched the flame climb through the cage of the cap like something let out of a jar.
Far off, across the black fold of Corrow Pass, a thin grey column rose and bent in the wind. Somebody up there had seen us. I wrote that down in the margin of the ledger, under the date, and then I stayed until the smoke was only a smudge and my fingers would not hold the pencil.
