You are art lettering on an arm

Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a small black tattoo of the words you are art, set in a serif typeface and running diagonally across the skin. The linework is solid and fairly even, with a bit of softness at the edges. The arm rests on striped bedding and a dark floral fabric, and the rest of the frame is in soft, warm light.

Dear Nell,

The big top came down in Dorking on Tuesday, and I have spent three evenings since with a brush in one hand and a tin of lamp black in the other, trying to make the last banner say what Mr Ambrose wants it to say. He wants GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH in gold leaf. We have four shillings in the float, a lion called Duchess who has stopped eating the good meat, and a ringmaster who now calls the tent the old ark. So the sign will be plain black letters instead, and the corner I have left for myself is not his to choose.

You asked last spring why I still bother with the small jobs, the names on the caravans and the price boards for the candyfloss. The truth is that Ambrose's grandfather kept a card pinned above the wardrobe trunk, curled at the corners, that said only what I have been painting all week. Nobody knew whether he meant the clowns, the girl on the trapeze or the men who lifted the poles. Most of the hands left before they found out.

Last night, after the last generator coughed itself quiet, I painted the words on the back flap of the canvas, low down, slanting the way the old card slanted. Small enough that only someone standing close will read them. Tomorrow we haul everything to a field outside Crawley, and I doubt a single soul will pay to walk through the gate.

But if you come up at the end of the season, bring a torch and stand right up against the canvas. Duchess will be snoring somewhere behind you, and the flap will still be there, pulled tight in the wind, with the words you need on it.

Your loving, Marjorie
