Sleeve tattoos on a woman holding a camera
Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo
A woman in pink lingerie holds a black Canon camera to her face, so her face and much of her hair are hidden. Her left upper arm carries a black and grey tattoo with roses and shaded foliage, and her right forearm carries dense dark ornamental linework. The warm, softly lit bedroom setting is plain, with a framed picture on the wall behind her.

The ovens are already ticking when you unlock the back door of Hollis and Daughter, and the flour on the sill has the grey sheen it only gets before anyone else is awake. You fill the kettle before you touch the light switch. Your aunt's old Canon sits beside the proving cupboard where she left it in March, its strap wound twice around the body, and you have never picked it up at this hour without feeling you are trespassing on her morning.

The christening order is due at seven: forty fondant roses for a family in Harrow, each one pinched from a ball of sugar paste and eased open petal by petal on greaseproof paper. Your aunt always said the trick was to stop before a rose looked finished, because a finished rose looks as though it is waiting for something. You work through the first dozen with your fingertips slick, and between them you glance at the camera and think about the thirty years she spent photographing this same street at this same grey hour: the bins, the bus shelter, the milk float that stopped outside the chemist every morning and never once went in.
When the roses are boxed, you finally open the back of the camera. The film counter reads thirty-six, and tucked under the strap is a slip of paper in her looping hand that says only, Mr Okafor will know what to do. He does. On Thursday he hands you a envelope of prints still smelling of fixer, and the last frame shows the pastry tray at the window, a row of half-made roses catching the first light.
You pin that print above the proving cupboard, beside the rota, and before you turn back to the bench you stop one more rose before it looks finished.
