Tattooed hands and forearms gripping a skateboard
Traditional · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a person in a white T-shirt and denim shorts, holding a skateboard by its deck. The left forearm carries a traditional-style portrait of a woman with flowers and a large rose on the hand, while the right hand shows a heart design with eyes and small lettering on the fingers. The image is high contrast with a plain, blurred background that keeps attention on the tattoos.

Rain came in sideways under the railway arches that Tuesday, and Dessie Marr was already shouting his prices over it, the way he had for thirty years, so the lad with the chequered deck had to lean in close to hear him. "Forty quid for that," Dessie said, rapping the grip tape with a knuckle. "Forty, and you'll have to buy the story along with it, because the board won't let go of one without the other."

The board had come in off the canal a winter back, its wheels still turning true and its deck stamped with a heart whose eyes had gone milky with damp. Nobody claimed it. Dessie kept it under the counter the way you keep a dog that doesn't care for strangers, and when people asked, he said the rose painted on the nose had been done by a girl who skated the Frenchay steps every night until the council fenced them off. Some said she'd gone to sea. Some said she'd only got tired of falling.
The lad counted out coins from a sock, pound by pound, while the heart on the deck seemed to watch his fingers. "It blinks if you lean too far," Dessie told him, and the lad laughed, the way lads do when they don't quite believe a thing and don't want to be the one who finds out.
He pushed off down the slope towards the flooded car park, the wheels humming on the wet tarmac. Dessie watched the checkerboard flash under each streetlight until it was only a dark shape on the water, and then he turned back to his stall and wiped the rain from the counter with his sleeve.
