Nessa, who kept the sheep hut at the summit, told him to leave them on the step and go home. He always did leave them, but he stamped the scree while he waited, and loose stones went rattling down onto her goats' pen. By April the nanny with the crooked ear had a bruise on her hip the shape of a hoof.

One May he arrived with hibiscus instead, the big red kind that grew in the glasshouse at the college, wrapped in a feed sack and dripping onto the path. Nessa came out wiping her hands on her apron. "Those were the college's," she said. "Harold, you have ruined the college."

He lowered his head and breathed out through his nose, and a little steam rose off the petals. "I know you mean well," Nessa said, and she sounded tired rather than cross. She took the flowers, pulled the stems together, and bound them with a loop of baler twine until they made a figure eight lying on its side, the way the old almanac drew his sign. Then she set the bundle on the step and went inside.

He did not stamp once on his way down. When he reached the first bend the sun broke through the cloud behind the summit, and the snow on the slopes threw long bright lines across the track, so that for a while the whole pass looked like it had been drawn with a pen by someone in no particular hurry.
