Aquarius flowers and heart-shaped stems
Fine line · Black and grey · Flash
A line drawing of three open flowers on looping, heart-shaped stems rising from a cluster of leaves, with a dotted circle behind the top of the stems. The word Aquarius in serif capitals sits below, followed by a short italic quote in two lines. The linework is fine and even, with small dotted accents and no shading, on a plain white background.

The storm had taken the Greta's mast and half the fleet's nets, and still Anders Vell was on his knees on the quay at first light, stitching cord with fingers that had stopped feeling the cold. The other men called him stone. He had a chest like a ballast tank and a way of standing that made the wind go round him, and he carried more than his share of every load without once asking for help.

The old folk of Skerrow Bay had a saying about men like him. Carry too much, they said, and the sea will come to collect the difference. It was the sort of thing grandmothers told children to make them eat their porridge, and nobody thought it meant anything until the winter Anders stopped buying oilskins at the chandler's and started leaving a jug of spring water on the back step of the widow Ruth Askew, then walking away before she could thank him.
Ruth kept three harebells in a jam jar on her sill, pale and papery, the only thing her husband had ever bothered to grow. When she took to her bed with the damp, Anders took the jar without asking. He wedged it into the wheelhouse of the Greta, where the spray could not reach, and told the boys nothing about it.
They went out again on the spring tide. Somewhere past the Carrick rocks the swell turned white and the boat lurched, and Anders, who had never once let go of anything, let go of the wheel to catch the jar before it fell. Afterwards the men swore the flowers were open when they came back in, each stem bent into a loop like a question, and that not a drop had spilled.
