A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Put the kettle back on, Ada, and stop fiddling with that spoon, because I've reached the part where the rose climbs out of the cup and nobody believes me. Your great-aunt Winifred had a set of china from her mother, twelve cups and twelve saucers, each with a wreath of pink roses painted inside the bowl. She kept them in the glass cabinet and never once let a child touch them.

The summer the back wall came down in a gale, a whole rose bush fell across the path. Winifred wouldn't have it cut. She stood at the window with her hands folded and said the roots were only looking for something to hold. After the rain, there was a single bloom pushing up through the chipped cup she had put out for the bins. Nobody had planted it. It had simply taken the cup for a pot.

So she did the sensible thing. She filled the cup with good soil from the potting shed and watered it with the cold dregs from the teapot, because she said a rose ought to be fed by a proper hostess. The saucer caught the runoff, and green shoots came up along its edge as if they were laying a table.

By August the cup was spilling roses over its lip, and the saucer had gone wild with leaves and curling tendrils. People came from three villages to see it. Winifred never sold a single cutting. She said a garden keeps what it's given and gives back the odd thing, and you pour it another cup and say thank you.
