Rose, ornate heart and ribbon design

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A pencil and ink line drawing on pale paper shows an open rose at the top, linked by leafy stems to an ornate heart filled with scrolling filigree and a dotted outline. Two ribbon banners with faint pink stripes wrap around the stems, and small dots and leaves fill the gaps. The work uses bold black outlines with light interior detail and only faint colour on the ribbons, so it reads as a black and grey design.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

You have the windlass in one hand and the tin of ochre in the other when the lock gates groan shut behind the Marigold, and Nell Garrow tells you to mind the cabin roof before you climb up there with paint. She has been painting canal boats for forty years and says a roof is the only honest place to learn, because the wind finds every mistake you make.

On the side hatch she has already sketched the rose in pencil, its petals opening like a slow argument. You copy the leaves and tap small white dots to hold the shape while the water slops against the hull below. Nell paints the heart herself, a plain shield she fills with curling filigree, scrolls that fold back on themselves until the eye loses the edge. "Don't chase it," she says. "Let the line decide where it wants to go."

The ribbon is the hard part. Your first stripe runs too wide and sags across the rose like a wet flag. Nell laughs, dips her brush in rust-brown, and makes you do it again, and again, until a banner rolls neatly from stem to stern. Your third attempt looks like it belongs there.

When the sun drops behind the lock cottages, she takes her finest brush and writes your name into the scroll, small enough that only the boat will know it. "Every boat gets one name on her," she says. "Yours is the one steering her next summer." You look at the wet letters and find you cannot say anything at all.
