Stacked teacups, pocket watch and roses on thigh

Botanical · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A stacked pair of teacups sits at the centre, with a pocket watch with Roman numerals above and a beaded chain looping down the side. Roses and leaves frame the design, with fine single-line outlines and light grey shading on the petals and foliage. The design is shown in black ink on skin against a pale background, with the tattoo filling most of the frame.

The Duchess of Harrowmere sent her teacups back to me three times before the spring frost, each one chipped in a new place, and each time she asked the same thing: that I mend them so well no one would ever know. I was the only mender left in Pellingford with hands steady enough for porcelain so thin you could read a letter through it, so I took her silver and her broken cups and promised nothing.

On the fourth visit she brought a pocket watch wrapped in lace. It had belonged to her husband, the old king's clockmaker, and it had stopped at a quarter past four on the afternoon he died. She set it beside the stacked pair of cups and asked me to make the join so clean the two would sit together as if never parted. Her beaded chain lay looped over the edge of my bench, and I could hear her breathing slow as she waited.

I worked through the night with rabbit-skin glue and a brush no thicker than a hair. Pink roses came back under my lamp as the glaze healed, petals ringing the rim of the lower cup. When I set the upper cup down, the brass case of the watch gave a small tick against the saucer, the way a sleeper turns over in bed. The Duchess did not look at the cups. She watched the watch.

By morning the hands had moved a single notch. She laughed with her eyes closed, paid me in silver, and left the lace folded on my bench. I still have it. Some repairs are only meant to hold until the owner is ready to let go of the hour they were keeping.
