Teal and purple dragonfly on upper back

Fine line · Back · Mixed · Photo

A dragonfly with outstretched wings and a body made of segmented blue-grey shapes, with a black swirling tail and curled antennae. The black linework is fine and even, while the wings are softly shaded in teal and lilac with pale highlights. The tattoo sits on skin with a slightly reddened area around it, and the design is centred on the frame.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The rain had been falling on Wendle market since before dawn, and by noon the awnings sagged like wet sails. Mabel Corran kept her eel stall at the corner where the gutter ran fastest, and she was the first to see the dragonfly come down out of the grey. Its wings were teal at the tips and lilac where they met the light, and its tail ended in a curl like a bent wire.

"That's the rain's clerk," said old Tomas from the pie cart. "Come to count what's owed." Nobody laughed. Everyone in Wendle knew the tale of the miller's widow, who shut her door on a soaked traveller and found her wheel stopped by morning. The dragonfly circled the eel barrel twice, then settled on the brass scale pan, its segmented body steady as a plumb line.

Mabel looked at the needle. It sat a hair past true, in the customer's favour, which was not how she usually weighed. Yesterday she had given a pound of smoked eel to a girl with a shawl over her head and a coin too small to cover it, and she had told herself the girl would not notice. The dragonfly did not move. The rain went on drumming on the tarpaulins.

Mabel wrapped a fresh eel in brown paper, pressed the girl's coin back into her own palm, and added a second eel for nothing. When she looked up the dragonfly was gone, and the rain had thinned to a fine mist hanging over the square like breath. Across the market Tomas was already shouting that the sun was coming out, and for once she believed him.
