Blue lily with swirling vines

Botanical · Colour · Photo

A blue lily with white stamens and pale centre highlights sits at the centre of the design, with black scrolling vines curling up from its base and above its top. The petals are shaded with soft blue gradients and darker edges, giving them depth. The composition is a single flower with flowing linework that frames it on a plain skin background.

Dear Ilse, the lily opened this morning while the lights were still on dawn cycle, and I had to sit down on an upturned crate because my knees went. Blue, Ilse. Not the grey-blue of the nutrient film or the bruised violet of the sprouting beds, but a true blue like the lamp shade in Mother's kitchen, with a pale throat and white pollen tips standing up like tiny fence posts.

It came up in bay six, in the corner where Okonedo keeps the failed cuttings. Nobody planted it. The manifest lists no lily at all, only the vine stock we brought for shade, and those curling tendrils had wound round a bracket, climbed past the spotlight, then doubled back in loops so tight Okonedo swore they were drawn with a pen. I reached for the shears to cut the vine away and see the root, but the stem went soft and warm under my glove, the way a sleeping cat does, and my hand stopped on its own.

I have logged it as contamination and sealed the bay. Only the two of us have seen it. I know what the council will say about an unlisted species on a ship with four hundred and nine people aboard and a closed air loop. They will want it pulled and composted, and they will probably be right.

So I am writing to you first, because you always wanted to see something that was never meant to be here. Come up to six on the next rotation. Bring a sketchbook. We will decide together what to tell them.
