Teal interlaced heart with pink ribbon

Mixed · Photo

The design shows a heart formed from teal interlaced bands with dark outlines, creating an open knot-like pattern. A pink ribbon loops through the centre and across the lower part of the heart. The linework is bold and even, with flat colour fills and minimal shading, set against lightly freckled skin.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, the lamp is nearly out and I will tell this only once, the way my grandmother told it to me on the salt road. Eleven hundred years from now, when the cities under the glass have gone to moss, there lived a rope-mender in the harbour town of Carrick Ness called Oona Vell. She had hands like old bark, and she could knot anything that would hold a boat or a bell.

One winter a stranger came up from the south with two lengths of teal cord wound around a broken spindle. He said his sister had asked him to bring them to whoever could join what was split. Nobody in Carrick Ness had seen a pink ribbon of woven thread before, and Oona turned it over three times before she asked him where it had been.

'Under the sea road,' he said. 'Wrapped round the wrists of people who were leaving.'

She did not ask more. She sat with the cords across her knees for four nights, and by the fourth she had made a heart out of the teal, a knot with no beginning, each band passing over and under the next so that no strand could be pulled free without the whole thing loosening. The pink she threaded through the centre and let it run down and out across the bottom, looping once around the place where the teal crossed itself.

When the stranger came to collect it he held it up to the window, and the light went through the gaps. 'It will not come undone?' he asked. Oona shook her head and tied the last tuck. 'Only if you pull it apart on purpose,' she said, 'and who would do that to a heart?'
