Teal ribbon and swirl heart on a forearm

Forearm · Mixed · Photo

A teal ribbon loops down the left side of the image, with soft shading that gives it a slightly dimensional look. Beside it, a heart outline filled with curling scrollwork is drawn in black or dark grey linework. The tattoo sits on a pale forearm against a plain, softly lit background.

The vat had gone sour again by the time Nell got down the steps, so she worked the paddle until the copper smell rose and caught at the back of her throat. Mrs Thwaite stood in the doorway with her arms folded, watching the beck slide past the wheel as if it owed her money. "Teal wants patience," she said. "Blue rushes it and green sulks. You've to bring it up slow, like bread."

Nell had been sent to the works at fourteen with a cracked slate and a letter from the vicar, and she had learned the trade the way the river learned its bends, by pushing against the same stone until it gave. The ribbon on the bench was for the regatta queen, two yards of silk the colour of a kingfisher's back. Mrs Thwaite had made the blue herself, the old way, from woad and a pinch of something she would not name. Nell had her doubts about the pinch.

On the last afternoon before the regatta, Abel Crowther the smith came down the lane with a gate over his shoulder. He had forged it for the churchyard, curls of iron twisting into a heart at the top, and he wanted the ribbon to hang from it for the blessing. Nell wound the wet silk through the scrolls and it dripped into the beck, and for a quarter of an hour the water ran teal all the way to the weir. Mrs Thwaite watched it go and said nothing, which Nell understood to mean it was right.
