Teal jellyfish tattoo on a calf

Calf · Colour · Photo

A teal jellyfish with trailing, wispy tentacles is tattooed on the outer calf of a woman's raised leg. The linework is loose and sketchy, with soft tonal shading in green and turquoise that fades toward the edges. The subject sits diagonally across the leg against a blurred background of a stone planter and a grey pavement.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The jellyfish had come ashore in the night, a dozen of them stranded on the shingle below the lighthouse, and Ada was already on her knees with a bucket when her father rang the bell for the second watch. She counted them the way he had taught her, one, two, three, because numbers kept her steady, and the sea kept throwing more of them up against the rocks.

The largest was the colour of old bottle glass, teal at the bell and paler at the trailing ends, its tentacles spread like wet thread across the weed. She had drawn it twice already in the sketchbook she kept in the oil store, loose pencil lines, then a wash of green ink she mixed from the copper sulphate meant for the foghorn gaskets. Her father said she would poison the gulls. She said the gulls had never complained.

By four the tide had turned. She carried the big one down on a folded sack and waded in to her knees, the cold enough to ache, and set it in the swell. It hung there a moment, lit faintly by the beam sweeping overhead, then unfurled and drifted out past the rocks, trailing its threads through the dark like ink lifting off paper.

Back in the tower her father was waiting with two mugs of tea and the logbook open. He had written in the margin: one vessel signalled, one returned. He did not ask where the other eleven had gone. Ada took the pencil, added a small tick beside it, and went up the stairs to watch the light turn over the water.
