Small fawn tattoo on the wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A small standing fawn is tattooed on the inner wrist of a hand that is held out towards the camera. The linework is fine and delicate, with light grey shading giving the animal's body and legs some dimension. The black and white photograph has a plain white backdrop, with the wearer's patterned denim shorts filling the right side of the frame.

The river at Hollin Ford was too high for the cart, so the carter's son lifted the grandmother onto his back and waded in with the goats trailing behind him. On the far bank a fawn stood waiting. It was no bigger than a loaf, its legs so thin they looked drawn with a pencil, and it watched them come up the shingle without any fear at all.

The border guard at Stennick was a man called Oswin Pell, who kept a ledger of every crossing and had never once written a deer in it. He told the carter the animal was not on the papers and so could not cross. The fawn stepped onto the wet stones of the bridge anyway, and the guard, who had three children and a wife who had gone south years before, found he could not raise his stick.
Nobody knew whose the fawn was. The old women said it belonged to the woods on the other side, and that any soul who carried a little of it across would never be asked for papers again. So the carter's son pressed a thumbnail of moss into the grandmother's palm, and she pressed it into the guard's, and by evening every traveller had a green mark on the inside of the wrist where the pulse ran.
Oswin Pell stamped the ledger that night with a steady hand. Beside the column for names he wrote, small and careful, a single word: passed. The fawn was gone from the bridge by morning, but the goats came home on time.
