Teal mandala on a forearm
Geometric · Forearm · Colour · Photo
A circular mandala sits on the forearm, built from layered rings of pointed petals around a cream and white centre. Bold black outlines define each shape, and the petals are filled with turquoise, teal and blue shading that gives them a soft gradient. The design is centred on the forearm, with a plain grey wall behind and a thin chain bracelet visible at the wrist.

Harriet had been told the rose window at St Aldric's would take three summers, and she had already spent two of them on the north transept, lifting lead came by came. The glass was old and tired, the teal panes gone the colour of a swimming pool in February, and every piece had to be cleaned, matched and leaded back into its black channels before the frame could hold. Her mentor, Tomasz Wren, a man who had never once hurried a cut, would only let her touch the petals on the outer ring.

Her first real test came on a wet Tuesday in October. A cracked piece near the centre, a cream lozenge no bigger than a thumbnail, had split along an old fault line. She spent the afternoon with a glass cutter and a pot of grisaille, copying the hairline shading by lamplight until her eyes ached. When she finally held the replacement up to the window, it threw the same soft gradient onto the flagstones as the original, pooled blue fading to green at the edges.
Tomasz looked at it for a long time without speaking. Then he tapped the lead with one knuckle, the way a builder tests a wall. "Good," he said. "Now you do the next one without me watching." She went back to the bench and did, and the rest of the rose stayed exactly where it had always been.
