Mandala tattoo on a forearm

Geometric · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A circular mandala with a central rosette, layered petal rings and scrolled ornamentation sits on the forearm, with a small floral sprig above and a second sprig with a teardrop motif below. The linework is fine and uniform in solid black ink, with no shading. The design is centred on the forearm against a softly blurred warm background.

The orrery on Lantern Deck has been out of true for eleven years, and you are the only one aboard still patient enough to shim its gimbals with strips of copper foil cut from old coolant lines. Hessa used to do it, humming the bell tunes her grandmother taught her, but Hessa is in the cold store now, and the brass has started to drift again.

Every ring on the thing is a drum of the ship's living habitat, nine of them stacked like petals around a single pivot, and the scrolls that curl off the outer edge are the spokes that hold them together. Nobody has looked at the whole design since the founders etched it into the cowling. You do, because the cowling is cracked and light falls through it in a pattern that makes the central rosette look like a hand opening.

The small teardrop hanging below the lower sprig is not decoration. Turn the cowling a quarter and it lines up with the notch on the water tank schematic in the margin of Hessa's logbook, where she wrote, in pencil, reserve nearly here. The sprig above points at the icy shard the ship has been grazing for three generations, and the sprig below points home.

So you do the careful thing. You fit the foil, you tap the central bead twice with your thumbnail, and the nine drums groan into alignment. Far down in the hull, a tank begins to fill with a sound like rain on a tin roof. You take the pencil from behind your ear and write the new course beside Hessa's note, in your own handwriting, small enough to fit inside the petals.
